The Complications
Nevada City's median home dates to 1947, a good three decades older than the typical build year across the wider Grass Valley service area, which sits closer to 1977. That gap matters for rollers. A lot of these houses have never had the track or roller hardware touched since the door went in, because nobody thinks about rollers until they start screaming or jumping the track. On a door this old, the steel rollers on the original track are usually worn into a groove that doesn't match a modern nylon roller's profile - you can't just drop in a new part and expect it to ride smooth. We often find the track itself is bent or narrowed from decades of the old roller wearing against it, which means the fix isn't just the roller, it's reseating or replacing a section of track to match. We tell people this upfront rather than quoting a roller swap and then finding the real job once the door's apart.
Booking a Visit
We cover Nevada City out of our Grass Valley base, about three miles down the road, so getting a truck to your door doesn't take long once a visit is set. Tell us the age of the house if you know it and whether the door has ever had work done - that alone tells us a lot about whether we're dealing with original steel rollers or a prior owner's nylon upgrade. If you're not sure, that's fine too; we look at the track and roller housing on arrival and go from there. We don't keep a branch in Nevada City itself, so every visit is scheduled from the Grass Valley side, which is worth knowing if timing matters to you.
What It Costs
We don't have a flat number to quote here without seeing the door, and we're not going to invent one. What we can tell you is that the age of the hardware is the biggest cost driver in this town specifically. A door with original 1947-era steel rollers and narrow track almost always needs more than a roller swap - usually some track work alongside it - where a door with newer nylon rollers on wider track might just need the rollers themselves. If your house falls into the area's lower median income bracket compared to the wider service area, we're glad to talk through which fixes matter now versus what can wait.
What Is on the Truck
We carry both steel and nylon rollers in a few stem lengths, because older Nevada City doors don't all use the same stem gauge a newer build would. We also keep sections of standard track on hand, since a roller job here often turns into a track repair once we see what decades of wear have done to the rail. What we don't carry is custom or oversized track for a nonstandard door opening - if your door turns out to need that, we'll tell you straight and get you a path to the right part rather than forcing a fit that won't hold up. That's the one limit worth knowing before we show up.
